Akutagawa Shopping Street is the oldest in Takatsuki City, featuring a 200-meter-long covered arcade. From the Edo period through the Meiji and Taisho eras, this area thrived as "Akutagawa-juku," a post town. In the early Showa era, a straight road was constructed, stretching from Takatsuki Station to a spinning mill (now the JT Biohistory Research Hall) and known as "Showa Shindo." The shopping street as it exists today gradually took shape when merchants—who had previously operated along the Saigoku Kaido road—relocated here to cater to the female workers employed at the spinning mill. Spanning the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras, the area has become home to a diverse collection of businesses. Establishments that opened between the end of the Taisho era and the beginning of the Showa era now boast over a century of history.
